What is GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax levied on most goods and services sold for domestic consumption. The GST is paid by consumers, but it is remitted to the government by the businesses selling the goods and services. In effect, GST provides revenue for the government. Also referred to as Value-Added Tax (VAT) in some countries.

Why is there a GST?

The Goods and Services Tax was launched at midnight on 1 July 2017 by the former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. The single GST(goods and service taxes) replaced several former taxes and levies which included: central excise duty, services tax, additional customs duty, surcharges, state-level value added tax and Octroi. Other levies which were applicable on inter-state transportation of goods have also been done away with in GST regime. GST is levied on all transactions such as sale, transfer, purchase, barter, lease, or import of goods and/or services. India adopted a dual GST model, meaning that taxation is administered by both the Union and State Governments.

A day on our Smart tour begins early in the morning around 6, when you may be asked to meet the SimplED tour leader in the lobby of the hotel. You will be taken to the first school straight from there. Usually in schools, there is a grand welcome program waiting for the visitors. After which you get to interact with students. This interaction takes place in auditoriums or classrooms depending on the number of students attending. You get to present before students for 5-7 minutes followed by a question-answer session. Before we leave, we meet and greet with the Principal and counselors. On an average we spend 1.5 hours in a school. The number of schools visited in a day are usually 3.

The student interface is vivid. The university representative is allowed to present before the students for a 5-7 minutes time-span highlighting the features of their universities. Once this is over, we break into tables and students approach university representatives for one-on-questions.

Open-house sessions on Smart Tours are a unique feature which allow on-the-spot follow-up and networking opportunities.
